Fidelity and Physical Intimacy W11

A marriage should include intimate relations that will help bring the couple closer together and unite as one. Intimacy can build trust and love. It is important that in a marriage, we continue to strive to grow, learn, and love together. Simple things such as holding hands, or a little kiss can let your partner know that they are loved and that you care about them. My grandma and grandpa will always hold hands at church and sit together. They always kiss each other before one of them goes somewhere. They are such a great example to me of being committed to each other and openly showing it. They aren’t afraid of people knowing that they love and care for one another. Both men and women like those small actions that show love and commitment.
It is also important that in a marriage, you stay completely committed to one another. Sometimes it can be easy to fall into traps that tear a marriage apart even if there is no intention of hurting your spouse. It is not appropriate to be talking to the opposite sex, who is not your spouse, about personal things. It is also not appropriate to be alone with anybody who is of the opposite sex who is not your spouse. In a BYU devotional call “The Law of Chastity”, President Ezra Taft Benson stated, “If you are married, avoid flirtations of any kind… So-called harmless meetings are arranged, or inordinate amounts of time are spent together. In all of these cases, people rationalize by saying that these are natural expressions of friendship. But what may appear to be harmless teasing or simply having a little fun with someone of the opposite sex can easily lead to more serious involvement and eventual infidelity. A good question to ask ourselves is this: Would my spouse be pleased if he or she knew I was doing this? Would a wife be pleased to know that her husband lunches alone with his secretary? Would a husband be pleased if he saw his wife flirting and being coy with another man?”
A simple, harmless conversation with someone of the opposite sex can become a more serious and intimate friendship than was intended. It can be hurtful to our spouse and cause a divide in a marriage. It is so important that a couple confides in each other with all their personal information and struggles. These intimate conversations have the power to build a marriage and make it stronger. Spouses should always be completely faithful to their partner.
